Little Happies: California Love

April 18, 2014

I’m coming late to the party with this post! 🙂 We were in Cali for the majority of this past week, hence the untimely Little Happies post. The trip to California was primarily for FOCUS. Jonathan is part of the West Region in FOCUS and their regional gathering took place in San Diego. We stayed a couple extra days to explore. This post will be brought to you by photos from our past week that made me very happy.

Prior to leaving for California, Jonathan and I decided to hit up a Grand-Opening Celebration for a new Chick-Fil-A in the neighborhood. We love the company AND it’s food.

If you showed up prior to 6am, you were eligible to enter a drawing to win FREE Chick-Fil-A for an entire YEAR!!!! The catch was you had to stay in the parking lot for 24 hours until the next day, when you got your prize.

We thought this was going to be a piece of cake. We had our tent, blankets, games, food, smart phones, and bibles ready to go. 100 people got chosen for this delicious privilege and we were hoping to be counted among the winners. Especially since only 175 people were in attendance….so our odds were great!

Despite the odds, we were NOT chosen! With our winning tendencies, I couldn’t believe it. But we had a lot of fun in the process. Can’t wait to try again when more Chick-Fil-A’s open in Colorado!

TEN COMMANDMENTS, THE (2)

Watching The Ten Commandments was a tradition in my family growing up. We typically watched it on Palm Sunday (when it airs on ABC) but since Jonathan and I were gone that day, we watched it prior to departing for Cali.

I. Love. This. Movie.

I absolutely love preparing for Easter by watching this movie – because Easter is our exodus from slavery! I love meditating on that throughout the entire movie. I also love seeing the Israelites act like total cowards even after God does like 1,000 miracles to prove his faithfulness – not because I like seeing them be cowardly…but because it’s just so human. I can relate to it. How many times have I seen God’s faithfulness yet I still act like I am stranded in the desert? Yup – I am just like the Israelites. Thank you JESUS for saving me!

Chilling in San Diego!!! We visited the USS Midway Museum (awesome!!!) and got to tour the entire ship. It was quite a history lesson and very fascinating. Above is a pic of us on the flight deck. We also made our way to the jail on board. Here’s to hoping it’s my only time behind bars. 🙂

There were numerous flower/cactus gardens we got to check out. My favorite was the Easter Lily display (they are special to me on many levels). We also ran across a rose garden with about every color you could imagine. Don’t go there after praying a novena to St. Therese asking for a specific color – you will just get crazy overwhelmed!

Lastly, we spent an afternoon in La Jolla watching seals and sea lions laze about on the rocks, soaking in the sun. Rough life!!

We made our way up the coast and hit Laguna Beach on the way to Los Angeles.

Ever heard of Galco’s Soda Pop Shop? If not, watch this video from CHOW and get ready to learn more about soda than you ever have!

We each got three interesting flavors….as you can tell when you see Jonathan’s “Mr. Q Cumber” soda.

We also got to visit some friends – Jonathan knew them from college and I got to meet them for the first time. They were a joy to be around and are truly an inspiration to us in many ways. One way is that John created a game! The King’s Army is his own design and we even got to play with the game-master himself! 🙂 We’re excited for it’s big release sometime next Fall!

P.S. We stayed at Up Front San Diego – a place we found on Airbnb.com and we really enjoyed our time there! It was our first Airbnb experience and it certainly won’t be our last!

Looks like you had a great trip to San Diego! We just moved from there few months ago, such a fun place to live! La Jolla is our usual stomping grounds, hopefully you got to see the beautiful frescoe of Mary, Star of the Sea in the Catholic church there!
A lot of the young adults were wondering if FOCUS is expanding to San Diego yet? They are hungry for it and the bishop is wonderful.. Do you know if it is a possibility yet?

Hey Ashley! You lived in San Diego? It was so beautiful!! Unfortunately we did not make it to the frescoe…we only got to the Cathedral downtown and then to Our Mother of Confidence. Bummer! As for FOCUS expanding to San Diego, I do not know. The west regional team would have more information about that. The USD chaplain came to hang out with us one day on the beach, so I am positive they know about FOCUS and a relationship exists. Hopefully soon! Until then, any students at USD can contact the focus.org/digitalcampus to work with missionaries. Hope that helps!

Sounds like a FANTASTIC adventure!! So happy you guys got to travel and explore. I find that that really helps with the IF blues. The new Chic-fil-A near us ran the same promo several months back. Sorry luck wasn’t on your side, but what a great story you got out of it!! 🙂
